I. Course Overview
The purpose of the PADI Manta Ray Diver course is to familiarize divers with the skills, knowledge, planning, organization, procedures, techniques, problems, hazards and enjoyment of diving with manta rays. The Manta Ray Diver Specialty course is intended to serve as a safe, supervised introduction to diving with manta rays in the underwater environment. The goals of the Manta Ray Diver course are:
A. To expand the student’s knowledge of manta rays.
B. To develop the student’s ability to interact with manta rays and their marine environment in a
responsible manner.
C. To create student awareness of manta ray conservation.
II. Course Requirements
A. Prerequisite certification: PADI Open Water Diver, Junior Open Water Diver or an equivalent
rating.
B. Minimum age requirement 12 years old.
C. Maximum student-to-instructor ratio 8:1
D. Manta Ray Diver academic presentation delivered by a Manta Ray Diver Specialty Instructor.
E. Dive data:
1. Two scuba dives over 1 or 2 days.
2. The maximum depth for training open water divers during this course is 18 metres/60 feet.
3. Scuba dives may be done during the day or night.
4. Scuba dives done at sites where manta rays are frequently sighted, however a manta
sighting is not necessary for certification.
5. Direct supervision by a certified Divemaster or Teaching Status Instructor required for
training dives.
